Team History

The High River Jr. B Flyers Club, a.k.a. The High River Flyers, was formed in 2003 and began play in the Calgary Junior B Hockey League.  After one year in the Calgary league, the Flyers petitioned to join the Heritage Junior B Hockey League, now known as the HJHL.

The year 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the Flyers as a Jr. B program.  Although the Flyers have never won a league title, they have competed well every year, whether it is as a high flying offensive team or a hard hitting, physically punishing group of athletes which laced up during the early years of the program.

The 2012 / 2013 Flyers marks a change in the direction of the team with many of the long lasting veterans moving on after finishing their Jr. career in High River.  11 rookies suited up with the Flyers this year and the future looks bright for a team that finished out of the playoffs but beat every team in the league at least once, played in as many as 20 one goal difference games and has been touted to be “”moving in the right direction” by league officials.

The history of the High River Flyers dates back much earlier as the Flyers Sr. Men’s team played for many years as a member of the Ranchland Hockey League.   Members of the current Jr. B Flyers Board and Coaching staff played for the Flyers including President Bill Holmes (Forward), GM Vince Miller (Defense) and Head Coach Murray Wegener (Forward).  Many other past Board members also played for the Sr. Men’s Flyers and have worked hard to keep hockey for young men alive and well in High River.
